Scooting in Italy

Italy has a scooter culture which, unlike the sporadic fancies of the US and UK, has never flagged in its scootering enthusiasm. From the very beginning to the present day, they are the transportation mode of choice. Also unlike other scootering countries, the iconic scooters of bygone times are of not perticular interest to the Italian scooterist. Scooters have been continually produced in Italy and continually consumed. The modern visitor to Italy will find barely a trace of the ancient designs which have all but been superseded by modern designs which, like the automobile, have undergone massive changes.

Together with trendy new Piaggios, there are also new Asian imports from Suzuki, Honda, and Yamaha as well as Chinese newcomers.

Both boys and girls from fourteen up may ride scooters with no requisite driving exam, which makes the scooter the ultimate emancipation device (see scooter lib.) and virtually all of the teen population is so equipped. Oft flouting the very recent European Union helmet laws, hair blowing free, the Italian teen, both male and female, is romantically mobile (See Dating and Scooter Culture).

From the professional to the student, to the retiree, scooters are used and appreciated by the entire spectrum of society for commuting, . Motorcycles and mopeds are not absent, just outclassed (see Mopeds). Cars are driven, but usually when an entire family is traveling together.
